SYDENCOL (PhenylPropanolamine HCI + Chlorphenamine Maleate)
Phenylpropanolamine is a decongestant.
It works by constricting (shrinking) blood vessels (veins and arteries) in your body. Constriction of blood vessels in your sinuses, nose, and chest allows drainage of those areas, which decreases congestion.
Chlorphenamine maleate blocks the effects of histamine and so reduces symptoms like itchy, watery eyes, running or blocked nose, sneezing and rashes.
Indication
For the treatment of common colds, hay fever, sinus, nasal congestion, watery eyes, sneezing and related allergic symptoms.
Dosage
Adults: 1 tablet 3 to 4 times a day
Children (2-6 years old)1/4 tablet 3 to 4 times a day
(7-12 years old): 1/2 tablet 3 to 4 times a day
Precaution
As in any other preparation containing antihistamines, drowsiness may occur. The patient is advised not to engage in activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating equipment. prolong use of Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) HCI can lead to dependence.
A variety of unwanted effects including impairment of concentration and performance, excitability, changed personality, sleep disturbance and exhaustion can occur within a few weeks of regular use. Chronic use can lead to psychotic reactions and cardiovascular changes including an increase in blood pressure, tachycardia and precipitation of anginal attacks.
